FALL 2008 TECH TASKS

Students will review these tasks and complete as directed:

  • During the beginning of the semester new students will demonstrate  competency levels for the tasks indicated.
  • Exempt will be students who had a computer class in High School that meets the state regents curriculum requirement.
  • Students needing help in mastery of a task will be provided one-on-one instruction, or a seminar will be prepared, to address the needed skill. 
  • Students with mastery level skills may be engaged to serve as "Peer Tutors" to help other students improve their skills.
  • Most are designed to be easily accomplished by sending an email to the Director of the Library (scu.library@swcu.edu)

  • Multiple tasks may be completed and demonstrated during the same week.

WHY TECH TASKS?   TECH TASKS provide the university with a means of measuring and comparing our school and students with other schools and students.  This will aid in identifying and establishing needed services, such as classes, instruction, or workshops, to allow all students to achieve while in school.   They allow constitute a "computer assessment" as required by the Oklahoma Regents for Higher Learning .

The first year (Fall 08) ALL STUDENTS (returning and new) will take the TECH TASKS.  After that, only new students will be required to take them.  We are requiring students to take these to develop a ‘snapshot’ of the students to better develop instruction, prepare for an institutional self-study, and identity new programs.

 TECH TASK 1 : Email—Access, G-Mail, & Netiquette

 ___The student will demonstrate ability to access the G-mail account. To access the G-Mail account go to www.freewebs.com/sculibrary; click on “Databases/Email”; and log into the G-mail account established for all students.

___The student will demonstrate ability to access their email.  To do this email the Library Director at scu.library@swcu.edu.  In the email give your name, your major area of study, and your favorite pastime.

___Netiquette is the common courtesies of communicating electronically via email.  Rules of politeness include: NEVER TYPING IN ALL CAPS because that means you are “shouting” ; Always opening the email with a “Dear____, “ just like a letter; checking your spelling, and keeping it short (emails are designed for quick and simple communications); saying thank you, etc.

___Send a “model” email to a friend, instructor, or the library. Include all the polite elements.  Provide a simple profile of yourself : name, hometown, what you want to do in life.

TECH TASK 2 : WORD PROCESSING: BASE LINE SKILLS

___The student will demonstrate ability to open a word processing program to create a document.

___The student will demonstrate ability to enter text into a document by placing name, date, “TECH TASK” in the upper left hand corner of the page. 

___The student will demonstrate ability to manipulate font, placement, and styles by centering “TECH TASKS FOR [Your Name].  Then making the text bold.  Next, on a new line that is right justified, begin listing the classes you are taking, and  your level as a freshmen, etc.

___The student will demonstrate ability to save a document to a file or portable device.

___The student will demonstrate ability to attach a word document to an email.

___Send a “model” email to a friend, instructor, or the library.  Attach the document created and send to the Library Director.

___The student will demonstrate their ability to send the document to print.  Sign and place in the Library mailbox or on the file on the Library Director's door.

 

 

 TECH TASK 3 : ACCESS AND USE (IN PERSON TASK)

___The student will demonstrate location of the lab by pointing out the “Internet Only” computers.

___The student will demonstrate understanding of the lab rules by listing them on the back.

___The student has read the US COPYRIGHT RULES on the printer.

___The student has been shown how to access the catalog and has demonstrated mastery of the process.

___The student has been shown how to access Lib9 and Lib8 at the SEARCH STATION

___The student demonstrated in the lab ability to use a portable disk device.

  

TECH TASK 4 : INTERNET (Searching, Citations, Ethics) (In Person & Email)

___The student will demonstrate the SCU model for citing an online resource such as a webpage.

___The student communicates knowledge of the difference between a SEARCH ENGINE and a SUBJECT DIRECTORY

___The student demonstrates ability to use more than one search engine.

___The student demonstrates ability to utilize Boolean search methods for maximum results.

___The student demonstrates  by applying criteria in the evaluation of a quality web site.

TECH TASK 5 : MS POWERPOINT (Base line skills)

___The student will demonstrate ability to access MS Powerpoint. 

___The student will demonstrate ability to create 3 slides. Slide 1: Your title with your name (can be related to something in your classes, your church, or business); Slide 2: Insert a graphic; Slide 3: Make a list (remembering that shorter phrases, bulleted, with clear 24 to 36 pt. font work best.

___The student will demonstrate ability to insert BOLDface .

___The design criteria for MS Powerpoint slides are used as a guide.

___Email completed sample to the Library Director.

  

TECH TASK 6 : MS EXCEL (Base line skills)

___The student will demonstrate ability to access MS Excel.

___The student will demonstrate ability to create an excel spreadsheet.

___The student will demonstrate ability to tabulate a column.

___The student will demonstrate ability to create a chart, graph, etc.

___The student will demonstrate ability to insert chart or graph into a document.

___Email completed sample to the Library Director.

 

 TECH TASK 7 : ATHENA, WEBPAGE, DATABASES (IN PERSON TASK)

___The student will demonstrate ability to locate the SEARCH COMPUTER WITH ATHENA.

___The student will print out a bibliography of resources on a topic they are needing for a class from the ATHENA LIBRARY CATALOG.

___The student will demonstrate ability to locate the library webpage and link to the databases.

___The student will send an email to the Director about three things they liked about the library webpage and three things they would like to see added.

___The student will send to themselves an article found on the databases.

___Print this out this email and bring it to the Library Director or her assignee.
